What Will Happen To Harry?

Filed under: Uncategorized — Stu @ 1:38 pm

The last Harry Potter book is coming soon.

On the weekend, disguised as a hobo as I’d locked myself out and had to wander around Sydney aimlessly while awaiting my beloved’s return from the country, I watched the latest movie. Order Of The Phoenix. It was a good movie, and made me belly laugh in a few places.

However today, while reading a review, I stumbled across the wikipedia entry that gives you the differences between the book and the film.

It made me realise there’s a lot that doesn’t make it in. And some of these are points I would have thought important. But then .. I’m not J.K. Rowling. Ha. Or even a movie director.

So anyway. I’ve started reading the books again. But this time, there’s a big pit of sadness sitting in my gut. It’s going to be over. And no matter how awesome the last book is, endings are sad. I remember when we finished the Hobbit for the first time (Dad+Mum reading to us), and the same with the Narnia books. Then, as I got older, other series/books invoked a similar feeling.

It’s good, but it’s sad.

And that’s what life is all about. Relationships. Of course, you can’t have a relationship with a book .. but you can have an imaginary relationship with the characters in the book. You can hate Voldemort and fall in love with Fleur.

I guess in the end, even though books can affect us (well, me .. and maybe a few others :) ), nothing is a substitute for the crazy antics that make up our own lives. The highs and lows, the relationships, loves, hurts, hatreds.

Anyway, I’m looking forward to the last book, but at the same time don’t want to read it.

‘Nuff for now. Perhaps the next post should actually be about some kind of development talk. Ha.

Finally, Live Writer Upgrades

Filed under: Uncategorized — Stu @ 7:33 pm

 Okay. It’s been a while.

Thankfully, it looks like it’s been a good wait. I’m thinking after posting a while in the new Live Writer Beta (2)?? I’ll do a review. But initially, it’s good.

One very cool thing ..

publishdate

Setting the publish date steps Live Writer one more .. step .. in the direction of being a functional offline blogging tool. You can write and write and write .. and by setting the publish date, I’ll not have to go into the wordpress admin panel in my browser.

Nice.

Okay, one more thing. This is _very_ cool.

picturefromweb

Check it. Now when you insert a picture, you can select one from the web. This is simple, but powerful. I mean, think about it. Now .. you are no longer limited by the mind’s splitting the desktop and the web. This brings them together. If you see an image on the web, you can snag it. Nice. Of course, there are copyright/legal things .. but ahhhh .. the beauty.

The Super Naturals

Filed under: Uncategorized — Stu @ 9:12 am

Supernatural is a great piece of telly. It’s got two great lead actors. They’re not particularly wide ranging, but that’s not the story. They are their characters. It’s got a nice big black car with a deep thrumming engine. Awesome. And it’s got magic. Not just what makes up the story, the spirits and demons and such .. but it’s got something.

Jared P (adaleki?) is gonna be big. Last night I was catching up on some Supernatural, and the thought appeared. He’s gonna  be big. I can’t back that up with any substantial proof. But there you go. I’m putting it down here on paper, or something similar :).

Diet Sidius

Filed under: Uncategorized — Stu @ 10:47 pm

I think Diet Coke might just be the liquier (not sure there’s any word spelt this way) of the sith lords. It’s now had a reversing effect on me. Instead of keeping me awake, the first caffiene + nutrasweet (or whatever) of the day sends me to la la land, ready for sleep. Struggling to stay awake. The forces of sleep are marshalled and ready.

Hmm. I think i must seek balance in the force. A little less caffienation, a little more waternation.

Something like that.

Spidey-Pee

Filed under: Uncategorized — Stu @ 7:41 pm

Don’t read this if you’re wanting an un-biased viewing for yourself of Spiderman 3.

The greatest single mistake in the latest Spiderman movie, in my opinion, was the complete absense of Spidey-Sense. This is what makes Spidey have that edge over just your ordinary super-enhanced awesome heroic figure.

There were a bunch of other issues with the movie, don’t get me wrong. Two too-many villians. Obvious studio influences over Raimi’s vision. And let’s not forget the crazy mixed up Peter+Venom dance. Comic Book Camp should stay with that old Batman TV Series.

Seriously, this just suspended all my disbelief. For the first moment, I thought somehow it was going to turn a little dark .. but no, Peter just kept on waltzing along. And then, as if the whole direction got confused, the girls started _not_ liking him. But why? He was acting just the same. That charasmatic camp. Am I meant to take that somehow the symbiote was inherently making Peter Parker evil to the senses. That for the first few bravado jigs he was sexy, then suddenly he just turned evil. And everyone else had cat-senses. Wait! No .. everyone else had spidey-sense. Yeah.

Let’s not forget the just ordinary way of exiting James Franco from the movie. He, in my opinion, had some of the best material throughout the movies, even the 2nd one. He was the bitter and scarred son of Gobby. What better revenge story than that of misunderstandings? But throughout the course of this movie, he was bad, good, bad, in-between, good .. dying in the arms of MJ.

Please, someone have the kahonas to keep a really good actor/character on the road to misunderstanding. Don’t let Harry find out the truth. Let it be close .. then fall away, and he continue down that road. Let him and Pete fight it out, sans-lycra uniforms. Let the love for MJ be driven to the front, unrequited on both sides, to some extent. Let the ghosts of the past fly high above them, drawing all together as MJ herself gets in the middle. Or, since they have completely screwed with canon, bring in the lovely Gwen Stacy, and have her be the exit vehicle. I dunno, something with some grunt.

Mind you, Gwen Stacy (Bryce Dallas Howard) is pretty cool. I’ve only seen her previously in the Village, which was underratedly cool. Although again, I thought her direction was a little confused. Was she playing the tramp, the genius, the actual love-interest. These things can be played all in one character, but you have to give time to the character, which in this movie, can never be done. Unless you made it the central story.

Speaking of MJ .. man alive. I didn’t mind her in the first two, but in this one. I’m not sure what it was, but by the end of the movie, the only decent main left standing (or not really alive) was Topher Grace. He was pretty cool as Brock. In fact, the added “face peel back” was awesome. Thomas Hayden Church doesn’t count as a Main, because he had about 3 lines. He’s pretty cool, but there wasn’t much to work with here.

As with number 1, Bruce Campbell got some of the best lines. This guy is gold. I’m now determined to rent out the Evil Dead movies shortly. Which Sam Raimi directed. Which is pretty well known.

I guess in the end, it smacked to me of too many cooks spoiling the broth. There was too much, and not very well developed. Each of the threads are awesome stories in their own right .. but I guess it depends on the story-teller. And if there are ten of them, each with different agendas, then bam goes the singular vision.

Again, to me, the greatest travesty, one that could have made other things a little more bearable, was the lack of spidey-sense. I want the danger warning!

Heroes Is TV 2.0

Filed under: Uncategorized — Stu @ 7:48 am

It has just struck me how important Heroes is as a piece of history. Not just because it’s awesome.

It is awesome.

And not just because it’s about super heroes with powers of regenerative healing and mind reading.

Heroes is TV 2.0.

Have you investigated just how broad the creation is? Tim Kring and his men have created something far more than a tv show. There are comics, blogs, arpgs (not sure if that’s the right term), and more.

I’m sure stuff leaked before about an episode that is then changed (like the names of the episodes) are part of the deal.

The TV Show is the main vehicle, but these other elements are all very important to Heroes. Story-telling has hit 2.0. Or maybe it should be dotStoryTelling. Ha.

The Sleeper Awakes!

Filed under: Uncategorized — Stu @ 1:00 am

Greetings my fellow earthicons.

I’ve been absent, it’s true. Many and varied have been the adventures experienced. Terrifying aliens, quantam light infarction travel, mega phaser guns, and killer drop-bears.

It’s true. I have been absent. But not without excuses. I have a hundred of them. The alien’s pet raptor-like-creature ate my work. I grew tired of meaningless programming when my brain was wired into the Borgmind. My kids needed the computer. The cockroaches took over our house. The Aliens with the pet Psuedo-Raptor came and ate the computer.

One of the reasons is .. Pimp My Clarion. I’ve released it just tonight, with posts that will go every day or so (timestamped to appear). It’s taken a while, mostly because at the end I decided to change hosting to Media Temple.

I have gotten through a big piece of functionality for Rasp. The last major piece for the next release is going to be harder I fear. Custom Content Pages. Basically a File created by Rasp, HTML (most probably).

But along with this, there are other changes afoot. And more.

Aussie DevCon is arriving within the month. I’ve been preparing my talk for a while, but it’s still just points and notes. Lots of chopping and changing. Crazy ideas, firing one after the other make it hard to string stuff together normally. Have to go _monk_ (Zoolander ref.). Or, better, have to strip out all the crud and focus on the single purpose of what I’m talking about. Then fill it with better crud. :).

Alrighty, nuff for the mo.

Why Gliffy Still Works For Me

Filed under: Uncategorized — Stu @ 8:58 am

Earlier this week I needed a simple image done, and my wonderfully mostly incompetant memory reminded me of Gliffy.

Gliffy was a great little online app. Actually, not so much _little_ as _simple_. A paired-down flash for drawing.

Visiting the site I logged straight in (without bothering too much to read the frontpage, except to notice the small fact that they had introduced “premium” accounts.

Hmff said my brain, “continue” in it’s robotic voice.

It was only upon logging in that I realised the trap.

All my documents would now be public. I’d created many more than three. Three is an important number, for many reasons. For Gliffy, it’s the number of “private” documents you can create on a free account.

Now, let me explain. No, there is to much. Let me sum up (ahhh, Inigo. I can’t wait for the next season of Criminal Minds).

On the outset, the idea of my drawings automatically being public scared the willies out of me. Why?

It’s just inbuilt. I (and I suspect most of we) want our creations to be private, and then let _us_ choose what goes public.

So I logged off. The robotic voice in my head was loud. “I’m NEVER coming back here again.”

Famous robotic last words .. stupid brain.

The people behind Gliffy have stumbled onto a very cool shift from “We’ll only let you create 5 documents on your free account”, or “You’ll only be able to see the latest 20 of your documents on your free account”.

They know I want to control the private/public flag on my drawings.

And they’re gonna suck me in.

This morning I decided that some images would actually be good public. Images I didn’t mind other people seeing, or actually wanted other’s to see. Strangers.

So I’m back! Not premium (yet), but using.

‘Nuff for now,  compiling has finished.

5 Different Things I’m Doing Right Now

Filed under: Uncategorized — Stu @ 10:43 am

Well, although the frequency of posts at Dev Dawn has been down, I’m still powering along with different projects.

(1) With the latest version of NetTalk out, am (slowly) getting back to Rasp. It’s wierd, because the two months it took to build a fledging website + products (beta) was so intense, (2) I’ve now started taking time to think about the future, the direction of this work. Rasp is still a goer. The others, not so sure.

Also, will at some stage do a rewrite of the web experience with ATS. Maybe just cut back to a Rasp site, and a single page for ATS. Not sure yet.

(3, 4, 5) Am working on some new projects. They are mostly content-driven (blogs), but there’s one in particular that’s quite .. off-beat. I’ll tell you about it later.

(6, BONUS!) Google Reader gets a lot of playtime now. I spend at least the first half-hour of night-work reading. Commenting too, although that’s part of the strategy for one of the above projects.

The third project is directly involving Clarion, so most of you should hear about it shortly. I’ll post here once it’s live.

All in all, it’s still a great time to be a developer. More than ever.

Oh, (7, another bonus thing), I’m gearing up more time as the Aussie DevCon draws closer for my talk (not sure if “talk” is the right word there). Have got most of the structure down, some fleshing out has been done. Once April hits, I’ll probably go at least 50% of my time on it, then come May, well, most other projects will have to take the backburner i think.

Cheers,
